What vision insurance actually covers

Vision plans are simpler than health insurance. For a low monthly premium, you typically get an annual eye exam for a small copay, an allowance toward frames or contacts each year, and discounts on lens upgrades like anti-glare coating or progressives.

When a vision plan pays off

• You or family members wear glasses or contacts and replace them yearly
• You want annual eye exams, which also catch early signs of diabetes and high blood pressure
• You have kids whose prescriptions change often

When it may not

If nobody in your household wears corrective lenses, an occasional out-of-pocket exam can cost less than a year of premiums. We will tell you honestly which side of that line you fall on.
